January, the month that somehow feels like it lasts 3,000 days, is in full swing. Add in the cold weather, and getting out to explore can feel like a challenge. The good news? You don’t have to wait for spring or 60-degree days to explore a Trail Town. If you haven’t visited yet, the York County History Center should be at the top of your list.
In 2024, the York County History Center opened its doors to the public, inviting visitors to explore, immerse themselves, and feel connected to our community’s rich past. Located at the corner of North Pershing Avenue and Philadelphia Street, along the Codorus Creek and Heritage Rail Trail in Downtown York, this former steam plant has been transformed into a vibrant historical hub that has truly become a focal point of our beloved city.
Whether you are a solo history enthusiast or looking for a fun, educational activity to enjoy with your family, the York County History Center checks all the boxes. With two floors of exhibits and Library Archives, discover stories and history you may not have even realized existed, some of which are still unfolding right here in our own backyard. There is even a dedicated kids’ corner, featuring hands-on activities to keep younger visitors engaged along the way.
When those warmer days return, or even if you are brave enough for a chilly bike ride or walk, the York County History Center is a perfect stop along the trail. As a Trail-Friendly Business, it sits directly on the trail and offers easy access to a bike rack and a bike repair station on site. Once you finish your visit you have many eateries within walking distance, such as Gather 256, to fuel up before hopping back on the trail. To add additional stops to your itinerary, check out the Trail-Friendly Business listing.
